Professor Hudson graduated from University of Cape Town (UCT) and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh )in 1989, and a Fellow of the College of Surgeons of South Africa (Plastic Surgery) in 1992. He subsequently obtained a Master of Medicine degree in Plastic Surgery from UCT. He is the only South African plastic surgeon to be a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons He holds a FACS, and is thus, the only South African to be a fellow of 3 prestigious Surgical Colleges in 3 different continents
He has been in clinical practice for 25 years. He is the Head of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Cape Town and Groote Schuur Hospital, and has been in this position for almost two decades. He is one of a very small group of plastic surgeons from South Africa who is registered as a specialist plastic surgeon with the General Medical Council of Great Britain.
He has an international reputation as a leader in the field, and serves on the editorial board of the British Journal of Plastic Surgery (now renamed Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery _. He is the only South African to regularly review for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery – the world’s leading plastic surgery journal. He is also on the editorial board of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and its sister journal PRS GO. He also reviews for many leading plastic surgery journals. This is a special and prestigious acknowledgement from leading plastic surgeons around the world
Prof Hudson has pioneered a number of new techniques in cosmetic surgery, the mini facelift for example. He has enormous experience in cosmetic surgery and has published articles in the world’s leading plastic surgery journals on cosmetic surgery. He is highly respected by peers and his trainees have achieved success all over the world.
In 1918, he was awarded a prise from a prestigious peer reviewed USA journal for his article on improving long term results in breast reduction. Now he he been awarded another prize, also for his colloborative work on breast reduction. (He had been invited to participate in an international colloborative study with leading plastic surgeons based in the USA, Holland and France )
